american chateau: room one is a new commission by jaime hayon and nienke klunder on show at
spring projects in london. though they've been working together since 2003, this is their first
public collaborative exhibition together.
both sculptural and two-dimentional works are exhibited, drawing on iconic cultural exports
of the USA(where nienke was born) and the opulence of 17th century european craftwork.
the exhibition is made-up of a collection of both functional and non-functional pieces which look
like they were made for a palace from the 17th century, but upon a closer examination,
they are not what we would expect. such figures as classical marble busts of heroes and heroines
are replaced by such statues as a 'donut madonna' praying on her knees and 'the rocking hot dog',
a large sculpture on which the viewer sits with legs straddled. the centrepiece is a long,
glossy mahoganey table which has been designed in the form of a limousine and whose legs
are fashioned after macdonald's infamous fast food chain logo. all of the pieces are icons of the
american fast-food dream - a 'versailles meets disneyland hybrid', expressing an overlap of
historical periods and high and low culture.
the rocking hot dog which is 'fun to ride', is produced by a formula 1 manufacturer
